Position Overview:
The HSE Professional- Transmission anticipates and predicts hazards based on experience, historical data and other informational sources. He/she identifies and recognizes hazards in existing or future systems, equipment, products, facilities, work sites and operational work procedures. The HSE Professional evaluates and assesses the probability and severity of loss events and accidents which may result from actual or potential hazards. The professional applies methods of conducting hazard analysis and interprets the results. The HSE Professional provides advice and counseling about compliance with safety, health and environmental laws, codes, regulations, standards and the related Company requirements. The HSE Professional is part of a team of other HSE Professionals within the organization that consults, shares and contributes safety and health information and resources. The HSE Professional executes their duties, obligations and directions in a professional and skilled manner. We are looking for an individual who is efficient and comfortable being a member of a team.

Essential Functions:

  • HSE oversight of natural gas distribution system construction and maintenance
  • Observe, coach, train employees in safe work practices, procedures, and hazard recognition.
  • Conducts risk assessments, electrical assessments.
  • Participate in pre-job briefings
  • Evaluates work practices to determine where skills improvement is necessary.
  • Inspects excavations, confined spaces, work-zones traffic control, OH/UG job site hazards, ect.
  • Work with occupational medical professionals and employees to return to work
  • Perform incident investigations and root cause analysis
  • Enter/manage SEC’s Safety Information Management System database for events that in the greater eastern Atlanta region.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have experience/proficiency in natural gas distribution operations and procedures
  • Understand DOT/ FMSCA and utility damage prevention requirements
  • Utility-related work experience and training preferred
  • Must be able to work unsupervised and travel to urban, rural, and industrial work sites in various weather conditions
  • Degree in occupational safety, utility journeyman qualification or 5+ years utility experience.
  • Technical experience that may include any aspects of utilities infrastructure construction, operation, and maintenance (electric, natural gas, telecommunications, water) including overhead or underground electric distribution systems, underground or aerial telecommunications systems, underground natural gas distribution systems, DOT/CDL - heavy equipment operations, excavating, safety management systems, pipeline Operator Qualification, etc.
  • Valid vehicle operator’s / driver’s license.
  • Valid authorization to legally work in the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in a technical or engineering discipline and 3-5 years of safety-related or specialized technical experience (acceptable)
  • Certification in, or pursuit of any of the following certifications (preferred but not required):
    • Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST)
    • Occupational Health and Safety Technology (OHST)
    • Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP)
    • Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Bilingual skills a plus

Education                                                      

Bachelor’s degree in occupation health and safety or related field experience

Experience

1- 3 years of natural gas pipeline construction, with natural gas pipeline construction experience; understanding of claims investigation; working knowledge of 811 locate requirements and applicable excavation laws. This individual will communicate details of safety procedures clearly to employees. A high attention to detail and ability to motivate others while demonstrating detailed knowledge of OHSA and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) guidelines is required. Should be able to demonstrates strong leadership skills while exhibiting the ability to think practically and creatively to implement the best safety practices. Always responds quickly and efficiently to emergency situations while remaining calm in a crisis.
